Closing campaign speech Evelyn Matthei, Temuco, December 12, 2013.

I am very honored. I am very honored to be here today as a candidate for president of Chile, together with all our friends in the Alliance for Chile. Applause for them.

Here we are all united, all with great joy in our hearts, and willing to face on Sunday the votes that you issued. We have felt a wave, a real wave of enthusiasm and energy after the debate.

Yes you can! Yes you can! Yes you can!

For the first time, I think, we present to the country two very different visions. Because here it is not to vote for a person or another person, but on what we want for our country in the next four years. They are totally different views. I am of those who believe that there are problems in Chile. There are health problems, there are problems with education, there are problems with injustices, abuses. But I also believe deeply that Chileans should feel very proud of what we have built.

Chile is a wonderful country, and that we still have problems do not mean that it is wonderful. Chile is one of the best countries in Latin America, by far. By far! See how you're getting workers from many other countries, who come to Chile. We have seen brothers from Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, Haiti, of Ecuador, of many countries. Why come to Chile? Why come to Chile? Because here we have built a country, slowly, together, with everyone's efforts, but we have built a country of which we can be proud. I do not know what minute, I do not know what minute they came we had to tear down this house. Because from scratch, from breaking down the constitution, want to build it all over again, sorry, what's the point? When we have built a country that we are so proud.

I want to say ... notice a newly elected MP said that they wanted to change the constitution to be like Venezuela. Where it is increasingly difficult to find food to eat. He reminds them something, is not it? Well, I tell you, they are two completely different visions, completely different. Some who want to tear down the house we have built over the last 30 years together, and we, we want to extend the house, improve it, make it safer, and above all, with room for everyone. There is room for everyone in this house.

I want to say ... You maybe can not see it, but here in the first row is a very pretty woman, dressed as Mapuche. And I want to tell you, and I want to tell you that when we want a house to fit everyone with dignity, we want dignity for the Mapuche people.

What do you want us? What is our dream? But notice I do not want to talk about my dream, I want to tell you sleep. What kind of country they want to leave to your children and grandchildren? I have asked them many times, what they dream, what kind of country they want for their children and their grandchildren. And really, that's what I say all, is quite simple: they want to have opportunities for advancement. They want their children to have good education, so they can get ahead. When sick, they want to be treated well, and soon, with medical specialists. When they reach old age, they want decent pensions ter. They want to live in a country without crime. And they want no one abuses, that we respect our dignity as human beings, and that too has not so many differences between top earners and those who earn the least. Or not?

That's the dream of Chile. That's the dream of Chile. And I wonder, why to improve education we have to redo the constitution? Why to have medical specialists, we have to tear down the house? Why else would a simple law we can improve pensions? Why then they want to change everything and throw it all down? Look, this began with a new constitution, all new, all that will mean is that politicians will be fighting in Valparaiso the next 4 years. That's all going to happen. And that's not what we want for Chile. What we want are concrete and as quickly as possible solutions.

Yes you can! Yes you can! Look ... some go around saying I do not want to change, I find that all is well, have not understood anything. I want revolutionary change for our country. Revolutionaries. And you know what? And you know what they will be revolutionary? Because we want to put as the main focus of our government the middle class. Les I have a deep respect and admiration for the Chilean middle class. They are the ones who get up early every day to work. They are those who worry that their children study to do well. They are the ones who help their neighbors when they are in difficulties. They are the ones who build Chile, through their efforts, their work, their seriousness.

What we have done for our middle class? We have not done anything. We have not done anything for our middle class. Look, the middle class is best known to anyone progresses if not on the basis of effort; effort, work, study, this is the order. But look, if there is a lady of 40 who strives to get the license of half a quarter, what do we do? We got on the score sheet and punish. When the lady has made his son go to a trade school and take a title, and is so happy because he has studied, what do we as a society? We got the score and return to scrub. So how can we? Do we want to reward those who do not study, they do not work? Or do we want to reward the people who strive, and take our country forward?

I'm sure, I'm sure that the vast majority of Chileans believe that we must reward the endeavors, and not to punish, as we have seen so far. President Piñera is the first to be concerned with the middle class. Finally he pushed through the housing subsidy for the middle class. That he started, we'll delve into all media. The middle class will be our north. We are going to protect a lot. But also, I note that we have chosen to close our campaign here in Temuco for several reasons. First, we wanted to be into regions, because just as the bureaucrats in Santiago believe they have all the solutions to all regions. We have to give more power and more money to the regions, to the regions, with their people - people here are fantastic - see solutions to problems.

We also wanted to finish in Temuco, Temuco is the capital because of our peoples. With which we will discuss whatever is necessary to find ways of peace and progress. We also wanted to finish because Temuco is the capital of the poster we're seeing there, the Christian people. I want to say, let's build a country at peace, a country where we reward the effort, a country where we will give the possibility as it has been doing President Piñera on education. Imagine that when he received the government had only around one hundred thousand scholarships for higher education Chile, now we come to 400 thousand. And we will move forward.

And one of the things people ask me very strongly, is the crime, the finish. In that sense, I mean there are many laws to be ending with the crime, but also let me render a tribute to our police, the Carabineros. They risk their lives for us. They allow us to sleep more tranquillos. They do not work 45 hours a week, working much more, without a single extra hour. And when they say it is not right to retire at age 20, I say: And is it fair to work twelve hours? Is it fair not to pay them overtime? Is it fair to have to be exposing their lives for us? Let justice throughout.

I mean, I deeply love our country. And we are determined to make Chile a proud, dignified, and just country. With your help. We ask you a question ... How much is one plus one? One plus one is seven! We will stick math teachers, but now we, one plus one is seven! I ask everyone who went to vote in the first round, with at least one person who did not vote, and will give the victory on Sunday. Yes you can! Yes you can!

As I said. I always thought that we can do, I said from the first minute. But everyone thought we were not going to move to the second round, and I always said, let's move on to the second round. And here we are! And I've always said yes you can, but no one thought much, until yesterday. Yesterday I noticed that the people awakened. After discussion, our people awoke.

So I want to say from the soul, this position I have not looked, but I have received with humility, with a huge sense of responsibility, and also with great faith that we must unite and take our country forward. And we can not allow them to come here to do experiments that have yielded such poor results in other countries. That we will not accept.

I've been asked to read something that happened to me. He says, and I quote: Chilean people, I am the voice of many who wish to speak and can not. We are a Christian people with values and principles. Our parents taught us, and our schools, values that we can not and do not want to forget. I take and make a call to Chile, a believing people. Evangelicals, Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses, Adventists, and all branches of religions who believe in God, love of family, the fundamental pillar of the nation. In our next government I will make it possible for family values endure and God is my witness. Thanks people of Chile.

Go in peace and hopefully on Sunday to vote. Help us take care of the votes, as proxies table. Calmly, with faith, hope, and very seriously, we will achieve. Yes you can!
